In this screen adaptation of the hit Broadway rock opera, Mark Cohen (Anthony Rapp), an aspiring film-maker, has lost his performance artist girlfriend, Maureen (Idina Menzel), to an uptight lawyer named Joanne (Tracie Thoms). Mark's roommate Roger (Adam Pascal) is an HIV-positive would-be musician who has misgivings about getting involved with Mimi (Rosario Dawson), an exotic dancer. Tom Collins (Jesse L. Martin), a disgruntled professor, falls for a transgendered street-drummer, Angel (Wilson Jermaine Heredia).
