On their way home from his son's recital, college professor Ethan Learner (Joaquin Phoenix), his wife Grace (Jennifer Connelly), and their daughter Emma (Elle Fanning) watch as the boy is killed in a hit-and-run accident. The driver Dwight Arno (Mark Ruffalo) is returning his son Lucas (Eddie Alderson) to his ex-wife (Mira Sorvino) after attending a baseball game. In one terrible instant, the two father's lives are devasted.
