Francis (Friedrich Feher) narrates the story of his friend Alan (Hans Heinrich von Twardowski), the victim of a brutal murder. Earlier, his death is foretold by the mysterious Dr. Caligari (Werner Krauss), a traveling scientists with a clairvoyant somnambulist named Cesare (Conrad Veidt). Soon after Alan is murdered, the beautiful Jane (Lil Dagover) is kidnapped by Cesare. Suspicious of Caligari, Francis tracks him to a mental asylum he apparently directs.
