Grant (Gordon Pinsent) and Fiona (Julie Christie), an Ontario couple who have been married for over 40 years, must face the reality of Alzheimer's that hangs like a cloud over their twilight years. With Fiona confined to a nursing home, Grant abides by the institution's policy of not allowing visitors during patients' first 30 days. But, when Grant is finally allowed to see his wife, he discovers that she has made a connection with Aubrey (Michael Murphy), a wheel chair-bound mute, and no longer remembers her loving husband.
