James Reedy (Nick Stahl) is a simple man lacking direction in his life when his sister Joleen (Charlize Theron) abandons her daughter Tara (AnnaSophia Robb) with him without an explanation. Initially, James doesn't believe that he'll be able to take care of his 12-year-old niece, but, when Tara faces being sent to a foster home, he overcomes his fear and complacency. Setting out on the road, James and Tara slowly bond as Tara comes to terms with her mother's disappearance and James reexamines parts of his own life that he has tried to forget.
