Even-tempered psychiatrist Sam Foster (Ewan McGregor) attempts to thwart his patient Henry's (Ryan Gosling) plan to commit suicide on his 21st birthday. As Sam is drawn into the complex entanglements of Henry's problems, he loses his grip on his own life as the world around him gets increasingly surreal. Sam's relationship with his girlfriend and former patient Lila (Naomi Watts) suffers as a result, and eventually he is unable to determine where his consciousness ends and Henry's subconscious begins.
