Jakob is a Jewish boy (played as a child by Robbie Kay and a young man by Stephen Dillane) living in Poland during World War II. When his family is murdered by the Nazis, Athos (Rade Serbedzija), a Greek archeologist who is working in the area, takes him in. Athos brings Jakob back to Greece and raises him as his son. But in spite of his good luck, Jakob grows up with a feeling of deep sadness, and longs especially for his sister who disappeared during the war.
