Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) is a decent and hard-working prison guard at Cold Mountain Penitentiary. When John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan), who has been convicted of rape and murder, is sent to Cold Mountain's death row, Edgemcomb and the other guards (David Morse and Barry Pepper) sense that Coffey is no ordinary prisoner.
