Ben Randall (Kevin Costner), a legendary rescue swimmer, is sent to teach an elite Coast Guard training program after an accident takes the lives of his crew. Struggling with the lose of his team, Randall is reluctant at first, but soon throws himself into creating a brutal, unorthodox training program. Along the way, he encounters Jake Fischer (Ashton Kutcher), a cocky former swim champ, and after some initial difficulty becomes the young man's mentor, preparing him for his first solo mission.
