After earning their English grammar school's highest ever A-level scores, a group of eight students work together to enter one of their country's top universities. Helping them prepare for their entrance exams are their history teacher Mrs. Lintott (Frances de la Tour) and their general studies teacher Hector (Richard Griffiths). The group's dynamic begins to change when the headmaster (Clive Merrison) recruits an energetic young contract teacher named Irwin (Stephen Campbell Moore), who encourage the boys to value originality over factual knowledge.
