After Hogarth Hughes (Eli Marienthal) finds a huge iron robot (voiced by Vin Diesel) tangled in the high-tension wires near his house, the boy rescues the talking, alien machine and the two become fast friends. But, when the Iron Giant starts munching on cars and tractors around town, Hogarth's neighbors start looking for the culprit, and the resulting commotion attracts the attention of a paranoid government agent (Christopher McDonald) who wants to destroy Hogarth's pal.
