Johnny Depp plays John Wilmot, aka the Earl of Rochester, in this historical drama. Wilmot, who lived in England in the 17th century, was a poet and alcoholic, known for his debauchery. After a period of repression, King Charles II (John Malkovich) is restored to the throne. He asks Wilmot to return from exile to direct a play to please the French ambassador. Wilmot does so, but ends up getting into trouble as he romances the lead actress (Samantha Morton), along with several other women, played by Francesca Annis and Rosamund Pike.
