After the bloody death of his best friend, once-famed oceanographer and documentarian Steve Zissou (Bill Murray) and his crew set out on an expedition to hunt down the elusive Jaguar shark that killed him. The team is joined by an airline pilot from Kentucky (Owen Wilson), who may be Zissou's son, and a beautiful journalist (Cate Blanchett), who is writing a feature that Zissou hopes will help to resurrect his career. To complete his mission and his next documentary, Zissou will have to "borrow" some equipment from his nemisis (Jeff Goldblum), convince his estranged wife (Anjelica Huston) to help fund the bankrupt project and battle a gang of modern-day pirates on the open sea.
