An old man (James Garner) reads a story about two young lovers to an old woman (Gena Rowlands) in a nursing home. Allie Hamilton (Rachel McAdams) and Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling) meet at a carnival and fall in love, but Allie's parents disapprove of him. After Allie's family moves away, she gets engaged to a handsome young soldier (James Marsden), after receiving no word from Noah.
