In 1666, Hester Prynne (Demi Moore) leaves England for the Massachusetts Bay colony, seeking a sense of independence as she awaits the arrival of her husband (Robert Duvall). As time passes and her husband is thought to be killed by Indians, Hester falls for a young pastor named Arthur Dimmesdale (Gary Oldman). When their affairs produces a child, Hester is publicly humiliated and forced to wear a scarlet "A" to punish her for adultery.
