Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson), a frustrated writer and recovering alcoholic, takes a job as the caretaker of an isolated hotel in order to do some writing. Accompanied by his wife, Wendy (Shelley Duvall), and clairvoyant son, Danny (Danny Lloyd), Jack comes to learn the hotel's sinister history as he slips slowly into madness. When a storm cuts off communication with the outside world, Wendy tries to protect herself and Danny from a maniacal Jack, while Danny contends with horrific visions of a bloody slaughter.
