In 1986 Park Slope, Brooklyn, Bernard Berkman (Jeff Daniels), a once promising author, now spends more time teaching than writing. When his wife, Joan (Laura Linney), begins to pursue her own literary talent, years of tension come to a head and break up the family. With their sons Walt (Jesse Eisenberg) and Frank (Owen Kline) left confused, hurt and searching for answers, Joan continues an affair with Frank's tennis coach (William Baldwin), while Bernard makes advances on one of his college students (Anna Paquin), whom Walt has fallen for.
