Rollo Martins (Joseph Cotten) is a small time novelist who flies to Vienna at the request of his friend Harry Lime (Orson Welles). Upon arrival, Martins learns that Lime recently died in a strange traffic accident. But after questioning Anna Schmidt (Alida Valli), Lime's lover, Martins realizes there is more to the story.
