When Melquiades Estrada (Julio Cedillo) is accidentally murdered by a Texas Border Patrolman Mike Norton (Barry Pepper), his friend Pete Perkins (Tommy Lee Jones) sets out to keep a promise he made to see that Melquiades is buried in his Mexican hometown. After kidnapping Norton and digging up his friend's body, Perkins begins a dangerous journey over harsh terrain while trying to elude a police search party.
