In 1980s East Germany, Hauptmann Gerd Wiesler (Ulrich Mühe), the Minister of Culture, eavesdrops on the lives of dramatist, Georg Dreyman (Sebastian Koch), and his girlfriend, the famous theater actress Christa-Maria Sieland (Martina Gedeck). Wiesler hopes that his mission to weed out disloyal citizens will help boost his career, but he soon finds himself absorbed by the intrigue and ideals of the lives of those he watches.
