While investigating ancient castle ruins in France, enigmatic archeologist Professor Edward Johnston (Billy Connolly) disappears. Believing that he is on one of his customary excursions, his team, including his assistant Andre (Gerard Butler), his student Kate (Frances O'Connor) and his son Chris (Paul Walker), initally dismiss his absence. But when the professor does not return, the team retraces his footsteps and discovers a handwritten letter from the professor dated April 2, 1357. When they discover a time machine in the professor's lab, the team recruits physicist Josh Stern ( Ethan Embry) and security guard Frank Gordon (Neal McDonough), and heads back to the fourteenth century.
