David Aames (Tom Cruise) is a wealthy, charismatic publishing executive who lives his life with little regard for others. Everything changes in an instant when a terrible car accident caused by his his sometimes-lover Julie (Cameron Diaz) leaves him disfigured and horribly depressed. Just when he has lost hope, David reconnects with Sofia Serrano (Penélope Cruz), a beautiful women whom he fell in love with after a brief meeting at a party. But, things are not quite what they seem, and eventually David's grasp on reality begins to weaken.
