In the future, the polar ice caps have melted, covering most of the earth in water. The human survivors live on islands of wreckage and travel by boat. The Mariner (Kevin Costner), a loner seafarer who only looks out for himself, stumbles into helping a woman (Jeanne Tripplehorn) and her young daughter (Tina Majorino) escape from a vicious band of marauders led by the evil Deacon (Dennis Hopper).
