Randle Patrick McMurphy (Jack Nicholson), a criminal pretending to be crazy, is sent to a mental asylum, where he hopes to serve out the rest of his term away from the harsh realities of prison life. Instead, he must contend with Nurse Mildred Ratched (Louise Fletcher), a stern, oppressive tyrant who has forced her patients into dejected submission.
