Kit Kittredge (Abigail Breslin), an aspiring reporter, lives with her mother Margaret (Julia Ormond) in her family's boarding house during the Great Depression. When her father (Chris O'Donnell) leaves Cincinnati in search of work, Kit and her mother are left to fend for themselves, growing their own food while taking in an assortment of boarders, including young hobos Will (Max Thieriot) and Countee (Willow Smith).
