The movie is based on an old Fitzgerald short story of the same name (loosely, they've reinterpreted the idea considerably) that was written many decades ago (long before Mork arrived on Earth) and that in turn was based on a famous comment by the even older Mark Twain - something about how it would be better if we were born old and then grew younger. The Twain comment could also have been the origin of the Orkian aging process, of course. Or perhaps they imagined the idea independently, as the only way to work Jonathon Winters into the plotline!
